Central America a bright spot for SAP's SME sales - Regional
Saturday, November 21, 2009
(BNamericas.com) - Software purchases by Central American SMEs are growing in spite of the global economic slowdown, the head of SAP's (NYSE: SAP) Mexico and Central America division, Ali Hamid, told BNamericas.
Sales in Guatemala, Costa Rica and Panama have been particularly robust, the executive said.
"Central America will continue to grow at a good pace during all of next year," he said. "There is a movement in those countries' economies which makes those SMEs that haven't made investments in the past, begin to view the market positively, and also recognize that they are a little bit behind."
Meanwhile, SME sales in Mexico took a beating this year, but there are indications that those companies will reactivate software expenditures in the near future.
"The second and third quarters were two difficult and complicated quarters" in Mexico, he said. "Many clients have postponed their purchases until the end of this year or next year. Others have made decisions to carry out one-time purchases to solve short-term problems."
SAP Mexico and Central America currently has 2,800 clients, and that figure will rise to 3,000 by year's end. Of the total client base, roughly 66% are SMEs.
Some 200-300 SME clients will be added division-wide during this quarter, Hamid said. "There is a large market."
Hamid - who was unable to provide concrete financial figures - previously identified SMEs as one of SAP Mexico and Central America's top priorities.
Globally, SAP saw third quarter net profits increase 12% year-over-year to US$435mn. Q3 global revenues were US$2.51bn, falling 9% from 3Q08....
