Cerro Verde calls off participation in waning national strike - Peru

(BNamericas.com) - The union at Peru's Cerro Verde mine has discarded plans to join the national strike that started June 30, which now appears to be drawing to a close.

A source with the union representing Cerro Verde workers told BNamericas on Friday that following internal assemblies and negotiations with the nation's labor ministry, Cerro Verde's workforce will continue working as it has since the start of the national strike.

Meanwhile, other operations which were on strike are reportedly planning to return to work over the weekend or before, including Southern Copper's (NYSE: PCU) Cuajone mine and Ilo smelter, and BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP, LSE: BLT) and Xstrata's (LSE: XTA) jointly controlled Antamina mine.

Among others, Volcan said its Andaychagua zinc mine has called off a strike, while Shougang Hierro Perú reported its workers are returning to the job at its iron ore operations.

Peru's most powerful mineworker federation FNTMMSP orchestrated the strike in an attempt to pressure congress to swiftly pass reforms on pensions, profit sharing and outsourcing.

Despite efforts by the private sector and President Alan García for lawmakers to pass the legislation and alleviate the conflicts, lawmakers still have not been able to reach a consensus on key points....
