Paraguayan state company Administración Nacional de Electricidad (Ande) carries out generation, transmission and distribution of electric power. The country's sole electric company operates binational hydroelectricity generation plants – Itaipu, a joint Paraguayan-Brazilian enterprise on the Parana river, and Yacyreta, a joint Paraguayan-Argentine enterprise on the Parana river – which have turned Paraguay into the world's third largest electricity exporter. Ande also operates the Acaray II hydro plant, which provides 15% of the country's power needs and is the only hydroelectric plant the country operates on its own. In addition, the company has six thermoelectric power plants and a 5,700km transmission network.
