Brazil's federal utility holding company Eletrobrás funds projects and owns power generation, transmission, distribution and marketing assets throughout the country. It is responsible for almost 60% of transmission lines and 38% of Brazil's generation installed capacity. The company owns and operates more than 53,000km of 230kV and higher transmission lines and 31 hydroelectric, 15 thermoelectric and two thermonuclear power stations with an installed capacity of 39,413MW, including Tucuruí (8,370MW), Itaipú Binacional (6,300MW) which operates the Itaipú hydroelectric dam on the Brazil-Paraguay border, Paulo Alfonso (3,984MW), Xingó (3,000MW), Angra 1 and Angra 2 nuclear power plants (2,007MW), Sierra da Mesa (1,275MW), Fumas (1,226MW) and Sobradinho (1,050MW). Eletrobras is controlled by Brazil's federal government.
