State-run utility Companhia Hidrelétrica do São Francisco S.A. (Chesf) is engaged in the generation and transmission of electric power in nine northeastern states. The company operates 14 hydro power plants and a thermal plant with a total installed generation capacity of 10,615MW. It also owns a 19,700 km transmission network, 116 substations and 755 transformers. In 2014 the company connected 300MW of wind power to Brazil's power grid following the completion of transmission infrastructure in Bahia state. Works included a 150MVA transformer and 230kV transmission line linking the Igaporã II and Bom Jesus da Lapa II substations. The new system initially brought online 294.4MW of wind power belonging to Renova Energia. Based in Recife, Pernambuco state, Chesf is a subsidiary of Brazil's state-run power holding Eletrobras.
