Bolivian mobile operator NuevaTel operates in the country under the Viva brand and is majority owned by US mobile holdings company Trilogy International. It is one of three mobile companies in the country and uses GSM1900 technology. In 2Q02 NuevaTel launched long distance services and signed MVNO agreements to lease out spectrum to local fixed line cooperatives Cotel and Cotas. NuevaTel was founded in 1999 and is based in La Paz, Bolivia. NuevaTel was formed in 1999 by a consortium led by Western Wireless International and it launched commercial service in 2000. Trilogy International Partners acquired the majority share of the business in 2006, following the sale of Western Wireless to Alltel in 2005. The remaining 28.5 percent of Viva is owned by Cooperativa Mixta de Telecomunicaciones Cochabamba (Comteco), the third largest landline cooperative in Bolivia.
