Brazilian rail transport company Transnordestina Logística (TLSA), a subsidiary of local steelmaker Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), won a concession contract in 1997 to build the Nova Transnordestina railroad, a 1,728km line in Brazil's Northeastern region that will connect Eliseu Martins, in Piauí state, with the port of Pecém in Ceará state and Suape port in Pernambuco state. Incorporated that same year, the Ceará-based company provides railroad transportation services for the stations and land encompassed by the railroad and all the intermodal transport services required for its operations as well as serving as port operator. Once completed, the railroad will have a transport capacity of 30Mt/y, particularly commodities such as iron ore, soybean, fertilizer, and gypsum. The 30-year concession contract was extended for another 30 years until 2057 or until the date when TLSA reaches an annual return rate of 6.75% of its total investment.
