Chilean state copper miner Codelco's Gabriela Mistral division is the business unit responsible for the operation of the Gabriela Mistral copper cathode mine, located in the municipality of Sierra Gorda, in Chile's Antofagasta region (II), 120km southwest of Calama. Commissioned in 2008, the deposit has an expected 15 year lifespan and reserves of 620Mt of oxide ore, with an average grade of 0.41% copper. The Gabriela Mistral division produces copper cathodes by electrowinning process, 87% of which is grade A. In 2013, Codelco started up the thermosolar plant, Pampa Elvira Solar. The plant is operated by Energía Llaima Solar and generates an average of 54,000MWh/y, providing 85% of the power needed for the division's SX-EW copper plant and thereby, reducing the Gabriela Mistral mine's CO2 emissions by 15,000t/y. División Gabriela Mistral is based in Calama.
