Calderón launches US$12.8mn water saving campaign - Mexico

Monday, October 19, 2009

Mexican President Felipe Calderón has launched a 167mn-peso (US$12.9mn) campaign to promote water saving measures throughout the country, the presidential website reported in a release.

The campaign, backed by over 120 companies, urges people to care for water as if it were a family member.

At the launch of the campaign, Calderón said that while 50 years ago Mexico had an average of 18,000m3/y of water available per person, that amount has dropped to just 4,000m3/y.

Water supply cuts that were implemented in Mexico City's federal district (DF) in June this year helped to extend the city's reserves to provide resources for another nine months, while reserve levels in June would have lasted just three months, Calderón added.

The president also advised that he plans to increase wastewater treatment in Mexico to 60% of the population by the end of his administration in 2012. The country currently treats 43% of water used.
