Description:

Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de México (Ahmsa) is based in Monclova in Coahuila state. It has two steel plants, produces approximately 5Mt/y of liquid steel and employs about 19,000 people. Its production and marketing activities range from basic raw materials to finished higher value-added products including flat and non flat products such as hot rolled coil, wide plate in coils or sheets, cold rolled coil, tinplate, tin-free steel and structural profiles. Its subsidiary Minera del Norte (MINOSA) is responsible for several mining operations: MICARE, which extracts about 7Mt/y of coal; MIMOSA, which extracts approximately 4Mt/y of coal; iron concentrate producer Cerro del Mercado Unit (CEMESA); and miner Cía. Real del Monte y Pachuca which also operates the Loreto gold and silver treatment plant. It also owns Arava Mines, which operates a copper mine in Israel, and Unidad Hércules, which supplies iron ore for Ahmsa's blast furnaces. In addition, Ahmsa owns Nacional de Acero (NASA), which has a production plant located in the city of Monterrey and sells steel products. It also owns Hojalata Mexicana (HOMESA), a marketing and distribution center for tinplate, tin-free steel, cold rolled sheets and hot rolled sheets. Another of its subsidiaries is Ahmsa Internacional, located in San Antonio, Texas, which distributes flat rolled carbon steel, heavy structural shapes and plates. Ahmsa was established in 1942 and is a subsidiary of the Northern Steel Group (GAN).
