Unión de Empresas Transitorias Represas Patagonia (UTE Represas Patagonia) is a special purpose company comprising Chinese engineering firm China Gezhouba Group Corp. (CGGC) and Argentine companies Electroingeniería S.A. and Hidrocuyo S.A. The consortium is involved in the construction, operation and maintenance of two dams on the Santa Cruz river. The original project envisaged a 1,140MW Kirchner dam -located 130km from El Calafete- with six Francis turbines and an annual generation estimated at 3,380GWh, and the Jorge Cepernic dam -located 170km from Comandante Luis Piedra Buena- with an installed capacity of 600MW and five Kaplan turbines for an annual generation capacity of 1,866GWh. But in July 2016, the federal government informed that it will reduce the amount of turbines in each dam, to five and three, respectively, and the total installed capacity to 1,290MW from 1,740MW. Now the Santa Cruz-based project will include a 550 kV transmission line.
