Introduction: The Six-Nation, US$335bn Opportunity

Latin America's persistent infrastructure gap and the urgent need for project development, together with the fiscal limits of many countries in the region, mean opportunity for investors in the sector. Experts estimate that in Brazil alone US$400bn would be required to solve the nation's infrastructure problems.

BNamericas' project profile database covers the details of 1,274 active pre-operational infrastructure, water and waste projects across Latin America, including 797 projects requiring a total of US$335bn in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. This report will break down the opportunities in those six countries, which in terms of capex represent 67% of the total regional investment pipeline of active pre-operational projects in our database, and provide context and insights around the reality in which many of the projects find themselves.

Brazil registers the largest project portfolio in our database with a total of 135 projects requiring a combined US$90.605bn, or 27% of the total capex among the six countries. In second place is Chile with US$68.041bn, followed by Peru with US$52.210bn, Argentina with US$46.716bn, Colombia with US$45.640bn and Mexico with US$32.019bn.

Thirteen percent of the 797 projects are at the early design and engineering stage, while 15% are at the prefeasibility and feasibility stages.  Six percent are undergoing advanced design and engineering, 5% are in environmental evaluation, 19% are awaiting a construction decision and 7% are at the tendering stage. Thirty-five percent of the projects in the six-country pipeline are under construction.

Notes on how the figures were compiled: The US$335bn figure includes all of the infrastructure, water and waste projects of all categories and sizes in the six countries mentioned above as profiled by BNamericas' project database, excluding suspended and cancelled projects and those classified as already in the ramp-up or operational phases. It also excludes the small number of projects that due to the limited information available do not register a stage and/or an investment amount, as well as binational projects.

Some of the projects in the bridges and tunnels category additionally include construction, widening or rehabilitation of highway. The highways category includes new roads as well as all projects primarily concerned with paving and widening. Some projects included in the potable water category include pipelines and/or wastewater treatment; the projects included in the water pipelines and wastewater treatment categories are those that include only those works.
