Alunorte to resume output at 50% capacity
Norway's Norsk Hydro announced that it reached a deal with the Semas environmental authority in Brazil's Pará state to resume output at the company's Alunorte alumina refinery under the latter's supervision.
In a release on Tuesday, Hydro said that Alunorte is expected to be able to ramp up to 50% production within two weeks. The operation suffered a 100% curtailment on October 3.
The move follows a Hydro announcement on Saturday that it was granted an exceptional authorization to use press filter technology in the processing of bauxite residues from Alunorte.
The license, granted by Brazil's environmental authority Ibama, will extend the life of its DRS1 bauxite residue disposal area and allow Alunorte to continue operations under safe conditions, the company said at the time.
"With firm documentation verifying the integrity of our bauxite residue disposal system when based on our press filter, and in alignment with Semas, we are now in a position to safely resume 50% operations at Alunorte," John Thuestad, head of Hydro's bauxite and alumina business area, said in the release.
"This is a highly welcome development to secure thousands of jobs in Pará, as well as securing supply to our global customers and markets," Thuestad added.
The 6Mt capacity Alunorte has had been under several embargoes since March 1 and a court order that cut production to 50% and prohibited use of DRS2 and the press filter technology.
Pará state authorities order the refinery to cut output by 50% on that date following heavy downpours in mid-February that led to floods and discharges of untreated rainwater from the refinery.
In Latin America and the Caribbean, Norsk Hydro also has operations in Argentina, Jamaica, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela.
