América Móvil confirmed as dominant player
A special court in Mexico has ruled against Grupo Carso, América Móvil's parent company, following a challenge regarding the telco's status as a dominant market player.
The ruling is similar to that made against media giant Televisa last month.
In the Grupo Carson ruling, the telecommunications and competition court said that Grupo Carso cannot seek legal protection against the application of market concentration measures applied by watchdog IFT, CNNExpansión reported
As a result, América Móvil remains classed as a dominant player and subject to associated regulatory measures.
The telco will be liable to fines, as well as making its infrastructure available to competitors. The end of interconnection and long-distance rates was introduced late last year.
América Móvil reported a drop in first quarter earnings and a loss of 2.1mn users to competitors Telefónica and Iusacell.
América Móvil recently changed its asset-shedding strategy, deciding to abandon its initial plan of selling shares. The company is focusing its efforts on Telesites, its new tower rental business due to start operations in June.
However, it is not clear whether Telesites will help América Móvil become classed as a non-dominant player since both companies are owned by the same shareholders.
