At a Glance: Ecuador's Sacha field
Ecuador hydrocarbons block 43, operated by state E&P company Petroamazonas, and its Ishpingo, Tambococha and Tiputini (ITT) fields are considered the country's flagship upstream development.
Authorities have said they expect ITT to reach average production of 80,000b/d at year-end, which would make the acreage the nation's principal crude producer.
Latest numbers from Petroamazonas show that ITT output on June 25 was 60,914b/d, behind the principal producer Shushufindi (70,835b/d) and Sacha (65,705b/d), both of which are also operated by the state company.
Despite its second place, Sacha, located within block 60 in Orellana province, should not be overlooked due to its contribution to the state's coffers that may increase in the near term.
Last year, even though Sacha production came in third behind Shushufindi and Auca, it was Ecuador's most profitable crude producing asset with revenue of US$1.02bn on account of its oil quality.
According to the Oil-Climate Index, Sacha boasts 29 degree API oil with low water and gas.
In addition, Sacha tops proven and probable reserves for Petroamazonas acreage.
To maintain the field's prominence, Petroamazonas has awarded CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering a US$25mn service contract to drill and complete wells at Sacha, with the aim of increasing production by at least 5,000b/d. Drilling is expected to begin in July.
Sacha is composed of stations Central, Norte 1, Norte 2 and Sur, and has 424 wells, of which 227 are producers, seven injection and 10 reinjection.
As part of the Sacha push, Petroamazonas plans to overhaul infrastructure at the field with the installation of surge and formation water tanks to improve operational safety conditions.
Ecuador looks to produce 540,000b/d at year-end; output on June 24 was 518,132b/d, of which 400,712b/d came from Petroamazonas, according to hydrocarbons regulator ARCH.
This month, Ecuador and other OPEC members agreed to increase crude output by 1Mb/d.
