ATM banknote neutralization systems made mandatory in Uruguay
Uruguay's government told lenders they must have banknote neutralization systems in their ATMs.
Banks have 90 days from next week to comply with the new rules, deputy presidential assistant Juan Andrés Roballo said.
Employing such systems - which mark cash held in ATMs with the likes of permanent dye in the event of unauthorized access - helps deter criminals from blowing the machines up, he said. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting.
Banks that do not comply will be barred from providing ATM services, Roballo said in a statement issued by the office of the president.
"This measure is the one that has provided the best results in Uruguay and globally," Roballo said, adding that currently not all ATMs in the country have banknote neutralization systems.
Police will also step up patrols in areas where there are non-equipped ATMs.
