Brazil's suspended lower house speaker Cunha impeached
Eduardo Cunha, Brazil's suspended lower house speaker, was impeached late Monday night by a vote in congress of 450 to 10.
Just 257 votes were required to remove the conservative lawmaker from his post. Cunha is now ineligible to run for office until January 2027.
The former congressman blamed the government of President Michel Temer for his impeachment, saying it did nothing to stop former president Dilma Rousseff's agenda to remove him from office.
Cunha, who led the charge to impeach Rousseff, is currently facing graft charges that allege he is one of the main players in the corruption scheme at state-run oil giant Petrobras known as Lava Jato. He is accused of taking as much as US$40mn in bribes and then laundering the money through an evangelical megachurch.
In March 2015 he vehemently denied having millions stashed away in Swiss bank accounts, many months before the accounts were unearthed.
As Cunha has been stripped of his seat in congress, he has now lost the legal privileges that protect federal legislators from going to prison.
The case against the former lower house speaker began in October 2015 when requests for his impeachment were filed with the lower house ethics council.
In June, Brazil's attorney general issued an arrest warrant for Cunha, saying his suspension had not stopped him from trying to obstruct the investigations against him in the courts and the lower house ethics council. He then resigned from his post in July.
