US supports Brazil's bid for OECD membership
The US government declared its support for Brazil's bid to become a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
The declaration came as Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (pictured) is making his first official visit to the US. Bolsonaro began his term on January 1.
"The US support for Brazil's entry into the OECD will be understood as a gesture of recognition that will further mark the union we seek," Bolsonaro (pictured) said in a speech.
The market-friendly Bolsonaro administration sees OECD membership as a way to improve public policy-making and attract more foreign investment.
The Brazilian leader and US President Donald Trump also reached agreements on trade.
"President Bolsonaro announced that Brazil will implement a tariff rate quota, allowing for the annual importation of 750,000 tons of American wheat at zero rate. In addition, the United States and Brazil agreed to science-based conditions to allow for the importation of United States pork," the US government said in a statement.
VENEZUELA
Leaders of both nations highlighted that they are watching the scenario in Venezuela closely.
"President Trump and President Bolsonaro reiterated that the United States and Brazil stand with the Interim President of Venezuela Juan Guaido, along with the democratically elected National Assembly, and the Venezuelan people, as they work to peacefully restore constitutional order to Venezuela," the statement read.
Asked by reporters about the possibility of a military conflict in Venezuela, Bolsonaro said that the intention is to find a diplomatic solution.
