Bolivia boosting hospital, electricity investment
Bolivia's government plans to build a US$70mn hospital in Santa Cruz department, as part of a drive to boost infrastructure spending in the Andean country.
Central government funding will cover US$35mn of the turnkey project in Montero, with the other US$35mn financed by the Santa Cruz regional government, vice president Alvaro García Linera said in a broadcast speech.
The government has presented studies for the project, while the Montero municipality will donate land, García Linera added. Montero will receive 115mn bolivianos (US$16mn) in oil and gas royalties this year compared with 20mn bolivianos a decade ago, the official noted.
In other infrastructure news, President Evo Morales inaugurated a 5.4mn-boliviano sports facility in Montero, where the government has invested 47mn bolivianos in roads, school, health and sports infrastructure projects over the past year, according to state news agency ABI.
Morales also took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for a 158mn-boliviano, three-year project to extend electricity coverage in Yacuiba in Tarija department, and inaugurated a 1mn-boliviano artisan production center in Beni department, part-financed by Banco de Crédito del Perú's Bolivian unit, the agency said.
Morales, who allocated US$2.5bn in public spending in infrastructure projects this year, increased the 2015 public spending budget by 37% to US$6.18bn. Infrastructure investment will include the telecom, energy, water and transport sectors, according to the economy ministry.
Morales, who was sworn in for a third consecutive term in January, has expropriated oil, mining, water and telecommunications companies, and pension funds since taking office in 2006 in a bid to give the state more control over the Andean nation's economy.
