Chile to widen Valdivia bridge
Chile will invest nearly US$28mn to add two lanes to the main bridge in the southern city of Valdivia, in Los Ríos region (XIV).
The information was reported by newspaper El Mercurio, citing Paz de la Maza, who is head of the regional office of the transport ministry.
Built in 1954, the Pedro de Valdivia bridge has only two lanes and it is the main link between the city and Teja island. The Cau Cau bridge was supposed to have alleviated traffic conditions in the area but its operation has been stalled since 2015, and the public works ministry (MOP) plans to dismount it.
The widening of Pedro de Valdivia will increase the bridge's width from 10.8m to 20m, according to the report.
The project is the result of an engineering study made by consulting firm Louis Berger. The regional government had requested the study and it was presented in October last year.
