Colombia Elections: Duque and Petro head to runoff
Conservative candidate Iván Duque and leftist hopeful Gustavo Petro will contest a runoff after taking the top two places in the first round of Colombia's presidential election on Sunday.
With 99% of polling stations counted, Duque had 39.1% of the vote and Petro 25.1%, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE)
Given that no candidate achieved the minimum 50% needed to win in the first round, a runoff will be held on June 17.
It is Colombia's first presidential election since a 2016 peace deal between the government and FARC rebels, which ended Latin America's longest and bloodiest armed conflict.
Duque (pictured on the right), representing the Centro Democrático party of former president Álvaro Uribe, has opposed key aspects of the accord that he claims are too lenient on ex-combatants.
Former Bogotá mayor and one-time Marxist militant Petro, of Colombia Humana, has vowed to maintain concessions to ex-guerrillas, warning that any changes would "tear the peace agreement into pieces."
Duque's pro-business agenda includes plans to cut corporate taxes and create new incentives for oil and mining companies. Conversely, Petro says he will reduce the country's dependence on extractive industries, raise farming subsidies and ramp up investment in renewable energy.
Former Medellín mayor Sergio Fajardo, of the centrist Coalición Colombia, narrowly missed the second round with 23.7% of the vote while former vice president Germán Vargas Lleras was fourth with 7.3%.
Blank votes accounted for 2.1%, tied with the Liberal party's Humberto de la Calle, who served as chief negotiator in the peace process.
Incumbent President Juan Manuel Santos, who cannot stand again after serving two terms, hailed the peaceful nature of the election.
"So far not a single voting station has had to be moved for security reasons," Santos said in a televised speech.
"It's been many decades since that has happened. In other words, these elections are going to be the most secure, the calmest," added Santos, who won the 2016 Nobel Peace prize for his role in the ending the country's 52-year conflict.
The CNE said the electoral participation exceeded 52%, considered a high figure by Colombian standards. Around 100 international observers monitored the vote.
