Chilean state oil company Enap is developing four geothermal plants in alliance with private companies that will begin to come online in 2011, according to a presentation given in Valparaíso by Enap general manager Enrique Dávila.
The Apacheta 1 geothermal plant in Chile region III outside the northern city of Calama will begin adding 40MW of capacity to the northern SING grid in 2011. Exploration costs will reach US$23mn and development costs will exceed US$110mn.
The Apacheta area could see geothermal capacity rise to 150MW, according to the presentation.
Also in the north, the Tatio I plant is expected to come online in 2011, adding 40MW capacity to the SING. Exploration costs are expected to reach US$27mn and development costs will hit US$126mn.
The El Tatio-La Torta area near San Pedro de Atacama could eventually provide up to 480MW of geothermal capacity.
In southern Chile, two plants will begin to come online in 2012.
The Chillán 1 plant near the city of the same name will add 25MW capacity to Chile's central SIC grid and start operations in 2012. Exploration costs will reach US$23mn and development costs will hit US$100mn. The Chillán geothermal area could eventually add 80MW of capacity.
The Calabozo 1 plant, meanwhile, near the southern city of Talca will begin operations in 2013 and add 40MW of capacity to the SIC. Exploration costs were stated at US$31mn and development costs will reach US$130mn. The Calabozo area could see its geothermal capacity increased to 380MW, according to the presentation.
Enap is developing geothermal projects in the south of Chile with Chilean generator Enel. In the north, the company has signed an agreement to develop geothermal plants with mining giant Antofagasta Minerals.
