Prepa calls for power savings

Tuesday, February 4, 2003

The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (Prepa, or AEE in Spanish) has called on clients to reduce electric power consumption due to the rising cost of fuel.

The probability of war in Iraq and the continuing strike in Venezuela will not threaten supplies but will raise prices, Prepa director general Hector Rosario said.

In December Rosario said that Prepa had agreed to buy fuel oil number 6 from Brazil's federal oil company Petrobras under a two-year contract, as part of its strategy for guaranteeing fuel supplies for thermoelectric plants. Prepa would save US$9mn on the initial purchase of 10 million barrels of crude, Rosario said.
