Argentina and Paraguay will commission expansion works at the bi-national Yacyretá dam requiring US$1.65bn.
A recent agreement to restructure billions of dollars of debt owed by EBY – the bilateral entity that operates the 3.1GW dam – will allow the investment to go forward, EBY executive director Humberto Schiavoni told Buenos Aires paper La Nación in an interview.
The funds will go toward two expansion projects requiring US$650mn and US$1bn, respectively, Schiavoni said.
The former entails a 270MW expansion of the dam's Aña Cuá branch, a project that will be put out to tender this year and allow Yacyretá's electricity output to increase by 10%, he said.
The official did not provide a timeline for the latter project, but said it will increase Yacyretá's installed capacity by 15% and its electricity production by 6%.
