Brazil's power generation capacity expands

While Brazil's power generation capacity expanded 2,949MW in Q1, the transmission lines network grew 2,758km and transformation capacity expanded by 9,546MVA.

The numbers were disclosed by the federal electric system monitoring committee on Wednesday.

According to national grid operator ONS, however, the country needs more hydro generation projects. The operator said the grid is losing regularization, since the latest power generation expansion is mainly based on wind and solar projects, except for from small hydro plants without storage tanks, which work optimal only during the rainy season.

Currently, the risk of electric power deficits is at 0.3% for the southeast/center-west sub-system and 0% for the northeast sub-system.
