Costa Rica's ICE told to prepare surplus plan
Costa Rica's public services regulator Aresep has asked state power company ICE to prepare a plan to inject surplus electricity into the regional power market (MER).
"During the years 2015 and 2016 it is probable that surplus electricity will be generated, reason for which it is necessary that ICE be prepared to continue taking advantage of the opportunities the regional power market offers," an Aresep release quoted the watchdog's energy head Juan Manuel Quesada as saying.
Aresep said that the Arenal reservoir is only two meters from its maximum level, which would require ICE to release water.
The regulator also pointed to next year's scheduled startup of the 306MW flagship hydroelectric plant Reventazón.
Last year, Costa Rica earned US$3.6mn from power exports to MER and saved US$44.4mn by importing lower-priced electricity, which reduced the need for thermoelectric generation, said Aresep.
The country's installed capacity nears 3GW, the bulk of which is hydropower, followed by diesel and bunker-fueled plants, geothermal, wind, biomass and solar.
