ICE guarantees national power supply despite atypical dry conditions
The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) guarantees that electricity supply will remain constant despite the atypical dry conditions prevailing in the country and that have substantially reduced the usual rains for the time, mainly due to the El Niño phenomenon.
Among the measures to face this period, according to the current projections, ICE implements:
• Increase in the contribution of geothermal energy. The six geothermal plants in the country are working at their maximum capacity to provide a firm and renewable base for national supply.
• Delay in maintenance of plants. The desembalses and scheduled maintenance will be adjusted to the conditions to guarantee the national supply, without putting equipment or facilities at risk.
• Monitoring of regulation reservoir capacity. For providing the necessary regulation to the National Electric System (SEN), the Arenal, Cachí, Pirrís, Angostura and Reventazón reservoirs are kept under strict monitoring to guarantee their optimum operation, so that their filling cycle suffers the minimum effect due to of the effects of the phenomenon that the entire Central American region faces.
• Use of imports and thermal backup. As explained by the ICE, after optimizing the renewable sources of the national electricity matrix, the Institute uses purchases in the Regional Electricity Market (MER) to level the demand, and as a last resort, it turns on its thermal plants, mainly Garabito.
The ICE will keep in constant review of the weather conditions and will take the corresponding measures, reiterating its commitment with the Costa Rican people to guarantee a quality electric service, based on the criteria of sustainability, solidarity and continuity.
