Snapshot: Fossil fuels raise share of Colombian power mix
Colombian power generation from fossil fuel-fired plants rose sharply in September amid lower output from hydroelectric dams, new figures show.
Gas, oil and coal-fired thermoelectric stations produced 31.05GWh/d, up 9.46% on the August figure, according to a report by grid operator and wholesale power market administrator XM.
Meanwhile, renewable sources contributed 162.46GWh/d, down 1.77% month-on-month.
The share of energy from fossil fuel-fired plants in the total generation mix was 16.04% compared to 83.96% for renewables.
Hydropower accounted for more than 98% of renewables output, with biomass comprising 1.31%, wind 0.08% and solar 0.01%.
XM said the thermopower ramp-up was expected amid an extended dry season and a "change in the assessment of water costs by generators."
Coal-fired plants reported the biggest jump in September production, delivering 8.56GWh/d, up 33.69% on August.
Output from gas-fired facilities climbed 2.41% to 21.84GWh/d while plants fired by liquids contributed 0.65GWh/d, up 10.16% month on month.
Generation from conventional thermoelectric plants is expected to continue rising in the coming months amid forecasts of an impending El Niño drought cycle.
