Work on Araucaria's Matheu plant halted
Araucaria Energy's 254MW thermoelectric plant in Matheu, Buenos Aires province, has been ordered by a federal judge to stop all work on construction in response to a claim filed by local groups over environmental concerns, according to press reports.
The plant is the second in the Pilar area to be subject to legal action in recent weeks. On November 30, APR Energy had operations suspended at its Matheu II thermoelectric plant shortly after its completion after the same federal judge ordered a halt.
And nearby in the same province, Araucaria's 127MW thermoelectric plant in Luján was stripped of its zoning permit earlier this month by the local municipality just before its completion, also following pressure from local groups.
Power market administrator Cammesa warned in a report earlier this month that the suspension of the plants – commissioned to combat the national energy emergency – will affect power supply to the northern Buenos Aires metropolitan area over the summer months.
