Fewer Brazilians with health insurance in November

The number of Brazilians covered by health insurance plans contracted in November, according to sector regulator ANS.

Some 47.3mn Brazilians benefitted from health insurance plans last month down from 47.8mn a year before.

This decrease is attributed to a rise in unemployment in recent years due to the severe recession.

Brazil's unemployment rate stood at 12.2% in three months that ended October – the most recent figure available, up from 11.8% a year earlier, according to statistics office IBGE.

The majority of health insurance plans in Brazil are group plans companies offer to their employees.

Contrary to the general trend, the number of dental coverage plans increased in November to from 21.6mn last year to 23.1mn a year ago.
