Four companies bid in Brazil's new satellite auction

Bnamericas

Four companies have submitted bids for a new auction round for four satellite positions that Brazil will award on May 26, according to telecoms regulator Anatel.

The companies participating in the new auction are Spain's Hispamar, France's Eutelsat, Canada's Telesat and Star Satellite Communications Company from the United Arab Emirates.

Hispamar and Eutelsat were both awarded positions in a previous satellite tender held in May last year, when Abu Dhabi-based Star Satellite left empty-handed.

At the time, Anatel collected 153mn reais (US$70mn), 213% above the established reserve price.

However, seven companies made bid on that occasion, with three winning rights.

The reduction in the number of players in this new tender might be related to the price: the reserve price for each position in the auction is 27mn reais (US$9mn), 221% higher than the 12.2mn set in the previous one.

All concessions are for a 15-year period, renewable for an equal period of time.
