Guatemala schedules digital switchover for 2022
Guatemala resumed its plan to transition to digital TV signals, with the country's analog blackout expected to take place in 2022, according to telecom regulator SIT.
During a seminar on terrestrial digital television, the SIT said the country will implement the Brazilian-Japanese ISDB-T standard as agreed back in 2013, reported local dailies.
Harumi Horikawa, advisor to Guatemalan authorities on the digital switchover, said ISDB-T technology provides high-quality TV signals, but also reduces the amount of spectrum needed to broadcast. In this regard, the implementation of this standard will provide the opportunity to tender more TV channels, as well as more available spectrum.
With only 210MHz of spectrum assigned, Guatemala delayed the tender for frequencies in the AWS spectrum, which could take place in the first half of this year.
The SIT drafted a set of legislative guidelines to reorganize spectrum frequencies based on usufruct to ensure the transition to digital signal without interfering with current operations, said Harold Cancinos, the SIT's operations manager.
The guidelines still have to be approved by the ministry of communications so they can be sent to the president for approval.
