Guatemala unveils energy plan
Guatemala's government has laid out a new energy plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of climate change.
The principal pillars of the energy and mines ministry's 2017-32 roadmap are renewable resource use, and energy efficiency and savings.
One objective includes promoting investment to develop 500MW from renewable energy with the long term goal of reaching 80% power generation from these sources.
Another goal is the introduction of alternative fuels along with increased oversight of the fuel and natural gas commercialization chain to improve competitiveness.
The plan also envisions E&P of the country's hydrocarbon reserves and the modernization of the oil and gas production and transport infrastructure.
Other objectives call for 30% of public sector institutions to implement energy efficiency and the reduction of firewood use.
