Honduras seeking consultant for spectrum auction
Honduran telecoms regulator Conatel has announced it will hold a tender to find a consultant to assist in drawing up a spectrum auction.
Bidding documents will be available at a cost of US$100 at Conatel offices from June 20-28. Contacted by BNamericas, Conatel said it was unable to give any more details until June 20. The announcement is available here.
Interested parties can find further information at the www.conatel.gob.hn website or calling (504) 2232-9600 ext. 9602.
Honduras has three mobile operators - Claro, state-owned Hondutel and Tigo. The country had a penetration rate of 97.7% in 2015, according to 5G Americas' Analysis of ITU Spectrum Recommendations in Latin America report.
Honduras has awarded 290MHz of spectrum to mobile operators, which accounts for 22.31% of the amount recommended by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for 2015 and 16.86% of the ITU's suggestion for 2020.
In that regard, Honduras was by 2015 above its Central American neighbors Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama in terms of the amount of spectrum auctioned but below Nicaragua, which has auctioned 420MHz and is at 32.3% of the ITU's 2015 recommended levels.
Honduras has allocated spectrum in the 850MHz, 1900MHz and 1700/2100MHz bands and has LTE services available in the country. El Salvador is the only Central American country that is yet to launch LTE services.
State telco Hondutel and mobile operator Tigo have this year both announced individual investments of US$100mn in Honduras.
Hondutel will invest in expanding fiber optic capacity to boost broadband and TV offerings, while Tigo will invest in both fixed and mobile networks.
