IBM to set up AI center in Brazil
US giant IBM will invest US$10mn in the development of a research and engineering center on artificial intelligence (AI) in Brazil.
The announcement was made at IBM Think 2019, the company's annual event which is taking place this week in San Francisco, US.
In total, the center will cost around US$20mn. Half of that will be split between IBM and São Paulo state research promotion agency Fapesp through a maximum of up to 10 years, IBM said in a statement.
The other half will come from research institutes and universities interested in becoming partners in the initiative.
Under the financing scheme, IBM and Fapesp will each set aside up to US$500,000 per year to set up the center and to keep it running.
This Brazil AI Center will be the first in Latin America to join IBM's IA Horizons Network (IAHN), created in 2016 to promote integration and collaboration among the world's top universities, IBM students and researchers to accelerate the use of AI, IBM said.
In November, IBM announced US$15mn in investments in Argentina, which included the opening of a client and innovation center to support local clients.
Research will be focused on industrial applications for the natural resources, agribusiness, environment, finance and health verticals.
IBM also aims to accelerate the availability of AI systems that operate in the Portuguese language so they can read, process, and speak Portuguese.
Particularly in the natural resources field, IBM developed an AI prototype in partnership with Galp in Brazil that could soon become a global product for the oil and gas industry, as Ulisses Mello, director of IBM Research in Brazil, told BNamericas last October.
IBM opened a Natural Resources Industry Solutions Lab (NRIS) in São Paulo in 2012.
"In its nearly 10-year history, IBM Brazil's research laboratory has been at the forefront of advances in AI research and has collaborated with the technology ecosystem in the country, promoting integration among researchers, students, organizations and companies," Mello now said.
"[With this center] we intend to work on an even greater collaboration with researchers from around the world, sharing knowledge to solve current and relevant problems of our society."
IBM and Fapesp also launched a call to researchers at universities and institutes for the presentation of projects and interested in becoming partners of the center.
Submission is open until April 15. Further information can be found here.
