Argentina could allow telcos to offer satellite TV by year-end
Argentine telcos may be able to start offering satellite TV as well as other pay TV services by the end of the year.
The government started procedures in 2015 to allow telcos to compete directly with cable TV companies starting January 2018. It also established a mechanism for a single license for all telecom services. However, to date satellite TV has been excluded.
The authorization "could come before year-end either through a decree or a bill that is sent to congress, which would make all TV services equal," a source from telecoms watchdog Enacom told Reuters
Enacom may approve the merger of Telecom Argentina and Cablevisión in mid-December, according to the source.
As Cablevisión is the largest cable TV operator in the country, the merger would create a formidable player offering quadruple play services. The merger also requires approval by the anti-trust commission, which is expected in March.
The merged company would have 240MHz of mobile spectrum, above the 140MHz limit, meaning that returning spectrum to the state is almost certainly going to be a condition.
