Brazil turns to digital water monitoring amid severe drought
Brazil's semi-arid institute (Insa), a research unit of the ministry of science, technology, innovation and communications (MCTIC), launched a digital platform to monitor the volume of 452 water reservoirs and weirs in the drought-stricken drylands, in the country's northeast.
Named Olho N'Água, the tool was created in partnership with the federal university of Campina Grande and went live last week. The cost of the project was not disclosed.
The platform tracks volume and share real-time information from reservoirs located in nine states of the drylands, which supply around 24mn inhabitants.
It also features state-specific and reservoir-specific data and provides historical context for comparison on water levels, such as storage capacity, current volume, the trend of the last six months and the history of previous years, according to MCTIC.
SEVERE DROUGHT
The northeast region is currently undergoing one of its harshest and longest drought cycles ever. According to latest measurements, 243 reservoirs were operating with less than 10% of their capacity and just 32 of the 452 being monitored had over 50% of water levels.
"I'm in Campina Grande [Paraíba state] and this is the worst water crisis of the last 20 years. We live with water rationing, just like in Pernambuco [state], and availability is low. This is one of the reasons why the system is necessary, urgent," said Insa director Salomão Medeiros.
On Tuesday, President Michel Temer visited the state of Alagoas, where a state of emergency was declared in 40 drought-hit municipalities, and he announced the release of 756mn reais (US$231mn) to fight the drought in 15 states.
The funds will be used to build 133,000 rainwater harvesting cisterns, ponds and water access projects, federal news service Agência Brasil reported.
