Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel's head, Mony de Swaan, and the president of the federal institute for access to information (IFAI), Jacqueline Peschard, have signed a cooperation agreement on transparency, according to the regulator's website.
"Cofetel faces significant challenges regarding transparency.... However, it has taken significant steps to make its processes more transparent, this agreement being one of those steps," De Swaan said.
Through the agreement, the IFAI will help Cofetel in training officials, providing information and assisting in data protection and organization. The institutions will work together to design strategies to announce and publish information, as a way to gradually reduce the number of information requests.
The number of information requests jumped 400% from 204 in 2003 to 824 in 2010. In the current year alone, Cofetel has received 470 requests, 368 of which have already been answered and 102 are being processed, De Swaan said.
