Colombia's ICT ministry Mintic modified the spectrum caps applicable to mobile operators.

The cap for high spectrum bands was increased 5MHz to 90MHz, while the cap for low spectrum bands was raised 15MHz to 45MHz.

The measure seeks to increase operator interest in the tender for spectrum in the 700MHz and 1900MHz bands, which after several delays is expected to take place this year.

The changes in the spectrum cap were implemented following a technical recommendation from spectrum agency ANE. Industry and commerce watchdog SIC supported the move, saying increasing spectrum caps would foster more competition in the sector.

Now that the caps have been raised, telcos Claro and Telefónica will be able to take part in the tender. Both operators have 25MHz each in the lower spectrum bands.

However, operator Tigo-UNE previously expressed discontent with the initiative, as the telco had to return 50MHz in the lower bands to meet the previous cap of 85MHz.
