Cuba's Etecsa to launch residential internet in Bayamo
Cuban state-run telco Etecsa is preparing a proposal that will detail how it will distribute 1,500 internet connections in a pilot program in the city of Bayamo.
The pilot program should be up and running before the end of the year, reported media outlet Cuba Debate.
Another pilot program carried out in Old Havana last year led to the commercialization of residential internet in the country's capital.
According to Amarelis Rodríguez, Etecsa's head of projects, the company aims to provide residential internet to 38,000 new households during the rest of this year.
Communications minister Maimir Mesa recently said that the number of public Wi-Fi spots in Cuba has reached 370, a leap from the 200 recorded last year. Granma province, where the city of Bayamo is located, currently has 60 public Wi-Fi spots.
The island also has 4.3mn mobiles lines and 4mn people have internet access. Of these, 1mn has a permanent Nauta residential internet account.
