Data Watch: Brazil fixed broadband
Fixed broadband remains the trailblazer of telecom services in Brazil. Together with 4G, it has been among the few services consistently growing in the country, while fixed telephony, mobile telephony and pay TV are in decline.
According to telecom regulator Anatel, 121,284 fixed broadband subscriptions were added during June, surpassing 30.3mn accesses, 2.49mn more than in June 2017. FTTH and cable modem connections drive the growth.
xDSL accounted for 12.9mn accesses and cable modem for 9.25mn. Fiber optics expanded to 4.13mn in June from 3.82mn in May and up by more than 70% from June last year.
In terms of players, small, regional providers ("others") grew by more than 60% between June 2017 and June 2018 and now account for over 5.43mn connections. Claro rules the market with over 30% of market share, followed by Vivo with 25% and Oi with 20%.
