Ecuador, Germany ink accord to develop digital economy
Ecuador and Germany have signed an agreement to work towards developing a digital economy and tapping the "4th industrial revolution."
Ecuador's industries and productivity minister Eva García said the agreement would enable Germany to share experiences and strengthen Ecuador's competitive practices, according to state news agency Andes.
"Today we're facing the fourth industrial revolution ... this involves consolidation in a digital world, improving the social, economic and commercial conditions of people, companies and states through digital technologies," García said, making reference to the use of big data, IoT, artificial intelligence and 3D printing.
Germany's manufacturing output is 22% of GDP compared to Ecuador's 12%, the minister said.
The official said Ecuador is focusing on boosting its software industry. The country currently invests 1.88% of GDP in technology and R&D and the idea is to increase that.
One area for potential development is smart agriculture. García said, adding that a working group was being formed with invites made to German companies Bayer, Siemens and Bosch o develop solutions.
