Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei opened an R&D center in the Colombian city of Medellín, as part of its plans to expand operations in the region.
The facilities will focus on new technologies for businesses and smart city applications, reported daily La República. The center is located in the Ruta-N complex, considered Medellín's technology hub.
Huawei is poised to invest in the areas of big data, smart cities, internet of things, and improving connectivity in mobile and fixed networks.
Colombia ranks 33rd in Huawei's 2016 global connectivity index, which measures how countries are progressing in the digital transformation based on broadband, data centers, and big data, among other elements.
