Innovation watch: Google's LatAm selection, Oi's co-innovation hub
Google announced the winners of the new round of its program for research scholarships in Latin America, the Latin American Research Awards, created in 2013.
Some 281 university projects from nine Latin American countries submitted applications. Of the 27 selected, 17 were from Brazil, three from Mexico, three from Chile, two from Colombia, one from Argentina and one from Peru. Of the projects 14 involve machine learning.
Since being launched in 2013, the program has benefited 46 projects and more than 100 researchers, Google said.
Winners were announced at Campus São Paulo, Google's space for entrepreneurs in Brazil's biggest city.

In Rio, Brazilian telco Oi launched a hub of entrepreneurship and innovation called OITO in partnership with companies, incubators and research centers.
As part of the development, Oi launched a call to select start-ups for an incubation program with investments of up to 150,000 reais (US$47,500mn) per project.
Oi said in a statement that OITO will act on three fronts: the incubation program for early-stage start-ups; the selection of more mature start-ups for acceleration, which will have access to the co-working area and to OITO's partners; and collaboration with Oi-Nokia's IoT Lab.
OITO includes strategic partnerships with Nokia, IBM, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, CPqD, Brazil's national telecommunications institute Inatel, and Yunus Social Business Brazil, among others. The solutions and products developed at OITO will be supported by Oi's innovation department, to be tested and potentially adopted by the company.
