Study: Mexican telcos fail to protect user data
The eight most important telecoms operators in Mexico fail to provide adequate user data protection, according to a study by digital rights associations R3D MX and Electronic Frontier Foundation.
The telcos (Movistar, Megacable, Axtel, Cablemás, Iusacell, Nextel, izzi and Telmex/Telcel) were evaluated on issues such privacy policies, transparency reports and commitment to privacy.
The telecom with the best score was Movistar, which obtained two stars out of a maximum of six. Iusacell and both América Móvil operators were tied in second place, with 1.75 stars.
On the flip side, Megacable was the worst-ranked company, with just half a star.
According to the report, none of the telcos notifies users of their data rights nor do they have an adequate privacy policy. All operators were given half points since they ask for an official warrant before reveal user data to third parties.
