Movistar launches HSPA+ technology in Quito

Ecuadorian mobile telephony operator Telefónica Móviles (Movistar) has launched its HSPA+ network in capital Quito, local newspaper El Comercio reported.

The operator invested US$60mn to launch the technology in the country's main cities, according to the report.

In July, Movistar launched HSPA+ in Guayaquil following a US$20mn investment.

Other cities where the telco already operates the technology are Ambato, Cuenca, Manta, Santo Domingo and Machala.

The company plans to continue deploying HSPA+ in cities across the country during 2012, company VP Sergio Almallo was quoted as saying.

Movistar Ecuador is fully owned by Spanish telecoms operator Telefónica (NYSE: TEF).
