Peru regulator may fine DirecTV for blocking World Cup signal

Peru's telecoms regulator Osiptel has begun sanctions proceedings against pay TV providers Latinoamericana de Radiodifusión (Latina) and DirecTV for alleged anti-competitive practices.

According to a statement, Osiptel's technical committee STCCO investigated claims by the Peruvian cable TV association APTC of collusion between Latina and DirecTV, which allegedly blocked smaller pay TV players from broadcasting Latina's FIFA World Cup programming.

In June, an independent sanctions committee that falls under Osiptel cautioned Latina from blocking its signal, which includes 32 World Cup games.

Latina and DirecTV have 15 days to provide a defense to the charges.
