Red Compartida goes live covering a third of Mexico
Mexico's wholesale shared network Red Compartida went live on Wednesday covering 32.2% of the Mexican population with 4.5G technology.
Fernando Borjón, head of telecoms investment promotion agency Promtel, said on his Twitter account that 29 of the country's so-called Pueblos Mágicos, which include top tourist destinations, were part of the initial coverage by network operator Altán Redes.
Promtel is Altán Redes government partner in the Red Compartida, a project designed to reach 92% of the country by 2024 using the 700MHz band to improve access to telecommunications in the Latin American nation.
Several companies, including Televisa and Telefónica, have said they are in talks with Altán Redes to make use of its network to improve services. Telefónica's Chief IoT Officer Vicente Muñoz told local daily Milenio they might consider using the Red Compartida for Internet of Things (IoT) services.
On the other hand, América Móvil has said it will not rely on the shared network. "We're not going to use Altán Redes. It's not because we don't want to but I don't think they will give us something we don't already have," América Móvil CEO Daniel Hajj said on an earnings call with investors last month.
