Venezuelan phone manufacturer Venezolana de Telecomunicaciones (Vtelca) has manufactured 1.23mn mobile phones so far this year, local press reported.
Vtelca, a joint venture between Venezuela's government and Chinese firm ZTE, launched a factory in 2009 in Falcón state. That year, Vtelca produced 147,572 mobile phones.
The factory mainly pumps out an entry-level phone called El Vergatario, which is offered by Movilnet, the mobile unit of state-run telco Cantv. But Vtelca is also manufacturing a midrange phone and expects to produce a smartphone to compete with the BlackBerry device, according to previous reports.
