Cement shipments fall 11.4% in Q1

Bnamericas
Cement shipments in Colombia fell 11.4% in Q1 compared to the same period last year, according to national cement producers institute Icpc. Total orders of 1.99Mt in the period represent an 8.8% drop over 4Q08. The reduction was mainly evident in January and February when an 18.3% drop was registered. "These are slow months, as January is not representative and February had fewer working days, together with the fact that the construction sector has been slowing down. However, in March things began to stabilize," Icpc stated. In March sales reached 735,385t, a 3.4% increase over the same month last year due to the start up of infrastructure projects and the number of working days. Meanwhile, Cementos Argos said results in 1H08 were high due to rising demand starting in 2H07. Icpc figures are based on consolidated results of firms Cementos Argos, Cemex Colombia and Holcim Colombia.
